The Formostar Far Infrared Body Wrap system has been manufactured in Germany since 1983. This body wrap system has clinically proven results for significant reduction in centimetre and weightloss over 3-4 weeks during 50 minute sessions.  The non-allergenic silicone wraps transmit heat to target weightloss to specific body areas, including stomach, hips, thighs and arms.  The Formostar body wrap system provides faster results than traditional far infrared products such as saunas.  The closer infrared rays are to the skin, the deeper the penetration.

Formostar's Background

The Formostar “Exclusiv” and the Formostar “Digital” Far Infrared Body Wrap systems are the only Formostars’ that are manufactured in Germany.  They are produced by electro medical Geratebau GmbH, a family business started in 1983 and still run by the founders sons who are committed, as was their father, to producing quality machines with only the best materials, that meet the stringent testing procedures set down by the European regulatory bodies. 

For example, the silicone used in the production of the wraps is non-allergenic, the jacks are those used for stage production and the manufacturing process is still completed in their plant in Hamburg.

As evidence of the quality, there have been over 25,000 Formostar “Exclusiv” systems sold and around 5,000,000 sessions conducted, worldwide, with some of the original machines sold still in use.

The Formostar was originally developed to aid in the relief of pain experienced by people with arthritis and joint mobility problems.

After continued usage in the market, it was discovered that people were also experiencing body reshaping and weightloss results.  

A clinical study was undertaken (Clinical study for the effectiveness of the FORMOSTAR - in depth thermal treatment for weight and size loss and degenerative joint and spinal column illnesses, Dr. med. A. MEDINA and Dr. med. K. RADTKE, 1985, Internal Medicine Department of the District Hospital Rinteln at the Weser).  The study found "significant weight reduction and substantial improvements in joint mobility".  It also found that "the quantity of the supplied heat is large enough to cause the therapeutic effect, without any thermal damage to the organs or the metabolic process."

How Formostar Works 

The Formostar system consists of a Control Unit and six heavy-duty non-allergenic silicone wraps that contain heat filaments.  One wrap each for the chest/abdomen area, stomach/hip area, two for the thighs and two variable wraps that can be used to target specific areas such as aching shoulders, under-arm fat deposits, fluidy calves or perhaps areas with pain.  The heat to each wrap can be controlled to suit a particular physiology or a person's tolerance to heat.  Each wrap has a colour coded velcro fastener which matches the colour coded output jack on the Control Unit.

From a physiological perspective, the Formostar generates Far Infrared energy, the energy our bodies naturally absorb from the sun, in the form of heat at a frequency that is easily and effectively absorbed by the body.  The input of concentrated, targeted Far Infrared energy stimulates the metabolism and immune system providing a wide range of Wellbeing and Weightloss related benefits.

From a scientific perspective, penetration of energy into a medium is dependent on the intensity of the source of infrared, the angle at which the ray hits the surface and the coefficient of absorbtion of material.  The infrared ray needs to be on a straight path, therefore the closer the ray to the surface the better the penetration.  The Formostar wraps are placed against the body meaning there is better penetration, which is why it is so effective and up to 93% of the rays can be absorbed to a depth of 4.5 centimetres.

The effects simulate many aspects of a sustained vigorous workout.  The deep heat reaches through muscle and tissue to stimulate the metabolism and increase blood circulation as would happen with concentrated exercise.  The major difference is that the heat is being absorbed passively and does not stimulate lungs or muscles.  This does not mean it should replace a balanced diet or exercise.  However, Formostar sessions in conjunction with a balanced diet and exercise programme can help accelerate results.  For those people that have difficulty exercising, Formostar can help compensate for the lack of activity.

Body Re-Shaping & Weightloss with Formostar

The results of the Formostar Clinical Study (Clinical study for the effectiveness of the FORMOSTAR - in depth thermal treatment for weight and size loss and degenerative joint and spinal column illnesses, Dr. med. A. MEDINA and Dr. med. K. RADTKE, 1985, Internal Medicine Department of the District Hospital Rinteln at the Weser) indicated that on average, the control group's results were: 

With diet: an average of 6.5 kilos lost in 10 sessions and between 7 and 8 centimetres lost in each of the thigh, abdomen and hip areas. 

Without diet: an average of 3-4 kilos lost in 10 sessions and between 5 and 6 centimetres lost in each of the thigh, abdomen and hip areas. 

To break down fat you generally need to expend energy, such as that generated in sustained exercise.  Exercise generates body heat and is widely accepted as one of the fastest ways to use calories. Outer parts of the body, where fat is typically stored, are normally poorly supplied with blood and can be anything up to 10'C cooler than the core body temperature.  Exercise increases the blood flow, which in turn stimulates lipolytic enzyme activity (fat burning). 

The Formostar utilises far infrared energy to produce heat, as it can be very efficiently absorbed by the body when generated around the 9.5 micron waveband.

The heat from the Formostar wraps which are placed on targeted body areas over a 50 minute session increase the blood flow.  As in exercise, when heat is absorbed by the body on a continuous basis, blood circulation is used to transport the excess heat as close as possible to the skin's surface, inducing sweat, to help dissipate it into the cooler atmosphere. 

To stimulate and maintain this natural metabolic cooling process over a 50 minute session, the body needs to use energy.  The effect is similar to undertaking a vigorous workout but without any lung or muscle load.  Cardiovascular conditioning can also be achieved, as the heart must work harder in order to pump blood faster through the body. 
A person using Formostar 2-3 times per week, as recommended, should experience body reshaping and weight-loss through the break down of fat, the loss of excess fluids and wastes. 

Sweating also plays a part in the loss with one gram of sweat being equivalent to .586 of a calorie.  Hydrating (which we recommend prior, during and after a Formostar session) will replace lost fluid as required but the calories are still lost in the process.

Formostar will be of most value with a balanced exercise and eating programme.  People participating in diet programmes can sometimes experience a plateau effect.  By combining Formostar sessions with diet this effect can often be overcome and may even accelerate weightloss results.  People that lead a very sedentary lifestyle can still achieve results but generally over a longer period, assuming that they exercise adequate control over dietary and other general health factors. 

Results will be dependent on each person's particular make up and physiology.  Basic body shape also plays a part in how quickly the results will be achieved.  Generally, the greater the excess weight being carried, the faster and more dramatic the body reshaping and weightloss results can be achieved.

Pain Management with Formostar

The Formostar was initially developed to assist in the relief of pain experienced by arthritis sufferers and improve joint mobility.

Heat is a generally accepted treatment for temporary pain relief.  

A primary goal of heat for pain relief is a tissue temperature increase with a corresponding increase in blood flow to the deeper tissue and an increase in muscle temperature, providing increased nutrition at a cellular level, reduction of oedema and removal of metabolites and products of the inflammatory process.

This process can be particularly helpful with people that suffer joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia.

Pilot Study

Title:The Clinical Efficacy of the Formostar Infrared Body Wrap System on Neuromuscular Conditions
A qualitative/quantitative one group pre-test post-test study was conducted to research the clinical efficacy of the Formostar Infrared Body Wrap System on neuromuscular conditions. A total of 22 participants met the inclusion criteria were selected at random.

Participants consisted of both women (18) and men (4) ranging from 22 to 68 years of age with varying neuromuscular conditions. Participants received standardized 40 minute Formostar sessions twice a week for two weeks. Quantitative and qualitative data was taken prior to first treatment and 24 to 48 hours after last treatment. Pre-test and post-test data was taken in the form of thermal EMG scan, weight, height, body fat percentage, McGills pain questionnaire, body circumference measurements, blood pressure, and pulse rate. Participants also gave qualitative reports at each session. A review of the demographic data reveals a generalised trend towards improvement in the neuromuscular condition for the majority of the participants. 15 out of the 18 participants demonstrated some pain reduction across a variety of symptoms with an average reduction of pain levels of 4.67 based on the McGill’s pain scale, indicating that the Formostar can aid the management of pain.
